
Prof. Dr. Ateş Karateke was born in Kayseri in 1959. He completed his primary education at Trabzon Gülbahar Hatun Primary School and Erzincan Fırat Primary School, followed by secondary and high school education at Kırklareli Atatürk High School between 1970 and 1976. He graduated from Istanbul University, Istanbul Faculty of Medicine in 1982. After completing his compulsory service as a physician at Altınekin Primary Health Center in Konya (1982–1984), he pursued his residency training in Obstetrics and Gynecology at D.Z.T.B. Women’s Hospital in Ankara from 1984 to 1988. He then worked at Suşehri State Hospital in Sivas (1988–1990) as part of his second compulsory service. Between 1990 and 1991, he completed his military service at Gümüşsuyu Military Hospital as a specialist in Obstetrics and Gynecology.
From 1991 to 1995, Prof. Karateke served as Chief Assistant at Zeynep Kamil Women’s and Children’s Hospital, followed by his role as Deputy Chief Physician at Süleymaniye Maternity Hospital between 1995 and 1998. In 1998, he was appointed Head of the Gynecologic Oncology Clinic at Zeynep Kamil Women’s and Children’s Hospital, a position he held until 2011. He later served as the Chief Physician of the same hospital from 2014 to 2016. Between 2016 and 2022, he was the Chair of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Istanbul Medeniyet University Faculty of Medicine.
He became an Associate Professor in 1994 at Istanbul Faculty of Medicine and was promoted to Full Professor in 2007 at Yeditepe University Faculty of Medicine. In addition to his academic and clinical roles, Prof. Karateke has taken on significant responsibilities in professional societies. He has been an Executive Board Member of the Turkish Society of Gynecology and Obstetrics (TJOD) since 2004, and he served as Secretary General of the Turkish Urogynecology and Pelvic Reconstructive Surgery Society from 2005 to 2009. He was also the President of the TJOD Istanbul Branch between 2008 and 2010. From 2017 to 2021, he served as the President of TJOD, and he continues to serve on its Executive Board.
Prof. Dr. Ateş Karateke’s main fields of expertise include gynecologic oncology, urogynecology, pelvic reconstructive surgery, minimally invasive gynecologic surgery, high-risk pregnancy management, and preventive women’s health. He has contributed to the advancement of women’s health through his leadership roles, clinical practice, and academic work. Currently, in addition to his academic contributions, he continues to provide patient care in his private clinic.
